The BLT summer drama children’s camp has proven to be successful. Now having completed its 4th summer camp it has proven to be a success in our community and a great fundraiser for Save the Haven. This fundraiser has brought in over $20,000 for the Save The Haven Campaign. Summer children’s camp was the brain-child of Jana Russell, JoAnna Sproles and Emily Henderson. It was their vision to provide an avenue for children to learn about the theatre and love it in hopes that they would continue the BLT legend once we “old-timers” are all gone. The camp started in summer 2005. Serving as Camp Director for the past 4 summers is Jana Russell. Serving as the Camp Producers for the past 4 summers are JoAnna Sproles and Emily Henderson. Camp has traditionally been the last 2 weeks of July. This way, the camp does not interfere with the large city churches Vacation Bible School. In 2008, BLT camp was held July 14th-18th and July 21st-25th. Cost for the camp is $150 per camper and include in the cost the t-shirt, cast photo, and DVD of the show. We also decided to give a multiple child discount for households with more than one child attending camp. The cost for the additional children will be $125 and 1 DVD will be given per household. Extra DVD copies are available for $25 each. The camp is traditionally two weeks long. The camp is held from Monday through Friday from 9am until 12 noon. The camp production is held two evenings; the last Thursday evening of camp at 7pm and Friday night at 7pm. Attendance to the camp usually hovers around 50-60 children. The camp is offered for children entering Kindergarten through entering 7th grades. (In 2008 we began offering the camp for 7th graders. Up until that time the camp was for 1st graders through 6th graders.) Other key adult “players” for the summer camp are: Debbie Blalock, Kellie Patti, Sarah Lloyd, Greg Russell and Tommy Sproles. In years past, Sidney Youngblood, Sherri Mathis, Laura Groth, Sue Minter, Carole Bennett, and others have assisted with the camp. Plays done on stage so far are: - Walter Anderson’s Robinson the Cat
- Peter Pan
- Pecos Bill
- Pinocchio
The 2009 Drama Camp play will be Alice in Wonderland. |
